Access to the Lyonia Preserve in Deltona, Florida is from the Deltona Public Library via a trail sign near their outdoor amphitheatre.
Rusty Lyonia grows on the Lyonia Preserve and other places in the southwest of Florida. It has thirty pairs of nesting Scrub Jays. We didn't see any during our walk of the outermost trail on the preserve. We figured we missed them because we were there during the heat of the day and would like to try again, earlier in the morning. We went out at about 11:30 returning back to the parking lot at about 1:30.
We liked the trail because it is one of the few trails in Florida where we have encountered uphill walks.
What we did see included:
* bird nests
* spiders
* butterflies and moths
* lots of food--grass seeds, acorns, berries
* pond
* beetles
* Palm warbler, Mockingbird, Bluegray Gnatcatcher (we heard Catbird and a Nuthatch).
Apparently we missed out on the E. Screech Owl, snakes, mammals (we saw deer prints and raccoon prints).
