The Kabbalah Deck is a helpful way to learn about a Jewish system of philosophy. The set includes a book by Edward Hoffman describing the pathway to the soul. Each card is explained in detail and the alphabet letter drawn. The preface explains some of the background and history about the Kabbalah. Also included is a card deck that shows the overall philosophy and steps along the path. I've found it has added dimensions to my understanding of how the world operates and has been a good tool for encouraging my creativity.

The Visual I Ching Cards and Commentary are a good way to enhance your creativity. The set includes a book by Oliver Perrottet that explains I Ching philosophy and an approach for using them as an oracle. Also included are two sets of cards. A larger set of cards are used to select 6 cards, one after another, from a set of 8. You use your selections to come up with a two card prediction -- effectively randomizing all the combinations. The other set of cards provide pictures of every combination of the elements. You use them to help you learn the meanings. It's a very easy to understand system that has four main elements -- fire, earth, heaven and water, then halfway postions between each, mountain, lake, thunder, wind. Definitely an enjoyable, easy to use system to help you understand the meanings of any question you might have.

The Portable Beat Reader edited by Anne Charters is a useful resource to learn about Beat era writers. The collection contains and introduction written by the editor, as well as one or two pages of biography for each writer included in the anthology. The Beat era was the 1940-50's. It starts with excerpts from Jack Kerouac, considered to be the guiding light of the philosophy including his "Belief and Technique for Modern Prose Essential Items" that is a useful list for all writers. Other writers include Allan Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, William Burroughs, Ken Kesey, Kenneth Rexroth, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Philip Whelan, Bob Kaufman, Diane DiPrima and many more. The selected texts highlight the writers best work, explores the poetry readings and other gatherings that brought this group together, and demonstrates many of the principles that made this group famous. Definitely a must read.

Creating a rainbow book as suggested in "What Color is Your Parachute" is a good way to organize your life.
I just buy a notebook and use those glue ended tabs to section off areas. The book is set up for 5 years. In it I place copies of
1) my goals and my progress on my goals
2) what I learn about myself
3) my budget and expenditures for each year
4) information about marketing
5) assessment of what I want out of life -- am I doing the things I want to be doing
6) basic contact information
7) miscellaneous information like my reading schedule and my daily schedule and organizations I'm involved in.

In ends up being my one stop memory for all I am doing.

A Sweeter Understanding by Rick Smith is a nicely packaged, pocket-sized hardcover book of poems from Sofa Ink books, www.sofaink.com. Rick is a former firefighter and other emergency services worker, who wrote tender poems for quite a number of years. This collection contains 130 poems covering many topics, many about the different loves in his life -- family, friends, as well as life, change, hope and other topics. Rick sometimes reads with PoetsWest, so look for him on the reading schedule www.poetswest.com. Definitely a fun read.

Native American Songs and Poems

Finished reading Native American Songs and Poems -- read my review on Judy's book. Very appealing especially since I need to get back to having more rhythm in my poetry. Typed up three poems, finished one scifaiku, hopefully more in the offing. Family visits today and last night -- I won at canasta for once. Weights and 520 calories today. Tomorrow, hopefully, work on my novel.
